Hi lovely human beings! Abbreviated newsletter today because, as I type this, I’m in the middle of my ninth load of laundry since my very dusty daughters and I got home from Arizona.
Highlights from our trip:
Feeling the wind blow through my whole body
Watching my girls ride and improve their horse skills
Kristen’s hand drawn map
Meeting the new horseman Brody
Eleanor getting right back on her horse after falling off (she’s A-okay!)
Watching my brother David corral the new quarter horses and their mothers while they gathered DNA samples from the babies
Visiting my favorite pasture at sunset
Following a mother cow and her baby for a photo (we’ll see if I got it)
Hanging out with David’s wonderful girlfriend Audrey and laughing nonstop
Here are a few iPhone photos. I can’t wait to show you all the film I shot!
“If the sight of the blue skies fills you with joy, if a blade of grass springing up in the fields has power to move you, if the simple things of nature have a message that you understand, rejoice, for your soul is alive.”

Really meant it about the nine loads of laundry; I follow a slight variation on the method from How to Manage Your Home Without Losing Your Mind. It might sound crazy but it’s really so easy: you wash, dry, fold, and put away one load at a time. That’s it! No running the washer and dryer at the same time. No guessing where I am in the process. And it sets a manageable pace, plus keeps my folding zone (the top of the dryer) open and available. Nine loads in 24 hours, no sweat. Don’t forget to wash on cold always!
Let your garden grow wild. I’m excited to show this to my kids and try getting our hands dirty this summer. (via Sarah)
My friend Elizabeth shared this alphabet crossword game with no clues in her newsletter. I like it even better than the NYT mini crossword!
Tips for choosing grocery store peonies.
Eleanor’s tenth birthday is on Monday (how) and I can’t wait to give her a signed copy of Making Things. Here’s a fun interview with the two crafty moms who wrote it.
Weekend plans: pizza and ice cream sandwiches with my BFF Rachel from Austin.
“When I first saw the desert I liked it. It was new and different. It immediately took on a meaning to me. I had heard it was barren. It isn’t. A little cactus—so delicate and beautiful, can hide from you. You have to go slowly, and look carefully.”
