Hi! Thanks for reading Buy Art, a spinoff of Handpicked, my weekly link list newsletter. If you know an art lover, I’d be very happy if show her this email. I love y’all!
Today we welcome our first guest artist, Paige C. Anderson.
Fun fact: we studied art at BYU around the same time, and I can’t say for certain, but I’m pretty sure we met in one of her classes where I was the figure drawing model (and it was BYU, so, gratefully, I was not nude). I still remember her senior show in 2011!
From Paige’s artist statement:
We all recognize and experience patterns. The most complex realities--for example, our DNA--are represented and understood as repeating patterns.
Pioneer quilt patterns are symbols of my cultural heritage. Not only I am the descendant of Mormon pioneers who crossed the plains, but also my grandmother Donna was an expert quilter. One of her best quilts is framed in the entryway of her home. It would often catch my childhood gaze when I frequented her home growing up. “How did she make that?” I would wonder. Quilting is work that reveals its toil only on close inspection. That is the way I want my artwork to be. I believe it’s a metaphor for a life well-lived.
This part made my heart pound:
In my art-making process, I paint the same pattern several times in different colors until there are an indiscernible number of underlayers. The viewer may only see hints of the effort that is behind the final product, but that is intentional.
Paige’s expert touch with layering, color, and repetition reveals a greatness and simplicity completely unique to her work. She’s one of those special artists whose vulnerability and perspective helps her viewers see things — especially the Divine — in ways we never realized we could.

ask the artist
Just for fun (and also because I’m nosy inquisitive), Paige answered a few quick questions for us:
Favorite thing in your closet? Oooh tricky question! Maybe my Alex Mill work jacket. I have gone decades without a jean jacket, and now I’m wondering how I did it! It’s the perfect weight, comfortable, the pockets are just so handy, and I feel cool every time I wear it.
Favorite spot in your neighborhood? We live at the base of Mount Olympus in Salt Lake City. From my house, I can walk to the trailhead of Neff’s Canyon and it still blows my mind that I have such easy access to the beauties of the Wasatch Mountain. Also, Beaucoup — this new bakery/boutique opened up last December and we now have a serious addiction to their sourdough bread and Roma focaccia!
Dream vacation location? I find myself my daydreaming about taking my kids on a month-long trip to British Isles. Pretty sure it would never happen unless my husband quit his demanding job, but a girl can dream!
A household item you can’t live without? My little brother gave me a battery adaptor for my Dyson for my birthday in January. It has changed my vacuuming life! If you have a stick vacuum and don’t live in a one-bedroom apartment, you, like me, may have experienced the vacuum dying right as you were getting going. This adaptor uses the same battery I already use on my driver and drill and now I’m a vacuuming fiend!
Worst piece of advice you’ve ever gotten? Don’t go to bed mad. Do you know what helps me feel less mad? Sleep.
