Buy Art: Wall Plates
Yes, it is giving Little Women Greta's Version and no, it is not a little much
Wall plates!!! Thank you to whoever started this trend, likely some cool medieval grandma who thought it was stupid to stack the good china on a shelf where no one could see those beautiful designs.
Two spiffy ways to hang dishware: 1. plate hangers with springs; 2. adhesive discs. If you prefer to shelve them, interesting easels abound.
To the plates!
1. Oriente Italiano Oval Platter by Gio Ponti
Porcelain, 13.5” x 11” // $420 // Buy it here
First up we have this queen from the House of Ginori 1735, can you stand her? I am obsessed with that cool pink shade, it feels so luxe and timeless. Bonus, she’s dishwasher safe in case you deem her worthy of dinner.
2. Fleur Dessert Plate by Zsuzsanna Nyul
Stoneware, 23 cm // $120 // Buy it here
This Hungarian artist is one of my favorites, it was hard to choose just one of her pieces for this newsletter. Take a tour of her breathtaking studio — her plate wall is my dream!
3. Cherry Tomato Plate by Minnie-Mae Stott
Ceramic, 22 cm // £175 // Buy it here
Can you STAND this little gem! What a masterpiece. My dad adores cherry tomatoes — do we think fathers like artsy plates as birthday gifts? I’ll let you know.
4. Cotswold Blue Serving Platter by Johnson Brothers
Ironstone, 13” // $69 // Buy it here
The classic that probably comes to mind when you picture a wall plate. Founded in 1883, the Johnson Brothers’ pottery business has moved from the legendary Stoke-On-Trent location to become part of the world-famous Wedgewood group. I’d hang this above a vintage-esque framed piece like this.
5. Mushroom Plate by Anna Maria Hussey
Ceramic, 9” // $24 // Buy it here
Delightfully historic and affordable at the same time! This plate comes from Anthropologie’s adjacent garden-centric brand Terrain, and here’s their description of this piece:
A reproduction of an illustration from the 1840s publication, Illustrations of British Mycology, done by Anna Maria Hussey. Hussey, an acquaintance of Charles Darwin, was a passionate enthusiast of all things fungi, and created these watercolor paintings in partnership with leading mycologist Rev Miles Joseph Berkeley.
6. Egg Wall Plate by Janske
Vintage ceramic, various sizes // $54 // Buy it here
Gosh people are so clever. We love supporting small artists upcycling vintage to create originals. Wouldn’t these make you smile every day?
7. Hand-Painted Pink Daisy Ceramic Plates by Bertrando Di Renzo
Ceramic, 28 cm each // $153 // Buy it here
The set of plates that inspired this edition of Buy Art. The texture of these is perfection, and I think the best art comes in pairs. The subtle differences in the flowers… this piece gets an A+.
Thank you for buying art!
xoxo, alex
PS: This plate made me laugh.
Loved all of these! And then ended up in Etsy’s “weird plate” category. I deeply love all three egg plates! 🍳
Now I realize I have a niche love of food plates. The tomato and egg plates are so fun!
