My perfect ballet flats and two "vintage" Easter photos
Also in here: Strands + one thing from each of my 4 sisters
Hi. It’s Wednesday. First of all, a very warm welcome to all the new readers who made their way over via Jen Shoop — so happy to have you ladies with us!
A bit of housekeeping:
Deep Dive tomorrow! Usually Handpicked is a Wednesday-only endeavor, but sometimes we get two in a week when there’s a Deep Dive or Gift Guide. Tomorrow’s Deep Dive is all about children’s picture books, specifically my favorite page of each of my favorite books.
If you’re going to Alt Summit in Palm Springs next week, will you please please reply to this email? I would LOVE to sit with you! I’m going by myself! And I’d love to have you at my roundtable talk on newsletters! (PS, remember that time I met Joanna Goddard after Alt Summit!?)
sorensen sisters
I’m one of four sisters (and two brothers, hi Dave and Dan!) and they each sent me something really great in the last 24 hours:
From Emily: a reminder to make green pancakes for St. Patrick’s Day. We use our favorite pancake mix and add 1 part spinach for 1 part milk, plus a bit of green food coloring (if you use eggs in your recipe, add a drop of blue to the batter to balance it back to green).
From Sarah: she just called me to chat about “spring break and patriarchy,” haha!
From Lizzy: a validating article about the wide variety of daily routines of famous creative people.
From Mary: this excellent commentary on portrayals of gender in Dune: Part Two (which was a GREAT MOVIE).
today’s bouquet
Have you tried the game Strands yet? Big fan!!
As a dead-center millennial (1990) I will never stop loving a trusty, pretty pair of ballet flats (also skinny jeans, but that’s a whole other thing). I just got these toasty-colored mesh ballet flats and I’m totally in love. They’re dainty, slightly sexy, and fit like they were shaped precisely for MY foot. Btw, who knew I was cool enough for mesh flats!?
Super into this cursive font.
Wish I could apparate to London to see this giant-soap-bubble-ish exhibit.
Austin Kleon casually (accidentally?) made a really great mini guide to Austin.
On the lookout for a neon pink sweatshirt, I love this one and this one.
Loved what Joanna Goddard’s sister said about being a woman and a doctor (very end of post).
Turns out that the song Happy Birthday was invented by the same two sisters who brought free kindergarten to American schools. *standing ovation*
Once or twice a week, I practice the organ at church, and sometimes on Sundays I walk home afterward. I’ve discovered that I don’t have a bag that fits my hymn books and extra shoes that I can comfortably carry on the mile walk home; perhaps this embroidered flower tote could be the one.

A few finds for the Easter-minded!
Wool-felted Easter egg tutorial. Perfect spring break craft.
Oh my gosh, this radicchio serving bowl!
Simple wooden Easter morning nativity.
I’m working on this hymn on the organ — maybe it will be ready by next Easter, haha.
These pink candles would be pretty in these little bunny taper holders.
My girls and I love adding floral temporary tattoos to blown eggs.
last thing: how’s this going?
I love hearing from readers, and I’m always looking for feedback. How am I doing with Handpicked? Is there anything you’d like to see more or less of? What do you look forward to most in this newsletter?
Hit reply and say hello — I’d love to hear from you.
Thank you so much for reading! xo
Ballet flats and skinny jeans are forever! Love those photographs <3
