Hi! You’re reading Buy Art, a side project about buying art from real artists (not Hobby Lobby), coming to you from the messy desk of an artist and mom of 4 in Manhattan Beach, CA.
Today’s featured artist is Erin Hanson, an oil painter from Oregon who paints humongous nature scenes with a palette of just four to five colors. She invented the style of Open Impressionism(!!) and primarily uses the two techniques of alla prima (Italian for “wet on wet”) and premier coup (French for “first attempt”) to give her pieces the luscious thickness and height of oil paint, tempered with the curious intensity of the visible strokes. The more I stare at her work, the more I fall in love with it. Erin’s works are gloriously saturated, energetic, and inimitable.
May I recommend zooming in to experience all the detail your screen will allow.
PS: I’m planning to stop at Erin’s studio on my LA to Seattle road trip this summer. I’ll let you know if I find ten thousand dollars in the street and bring one of her pieces home with me :))

These are so neat! I love the layering and height of the paint in each piece. I think this is why I'm drawn to mixed media works, because they are so obviously originals, pieces that can't be adequately reproduced in a print. And of course, I can't resist that many of her paintings are centered around the California coast and wine regions!
Omg #2!! Her work is so stunning. Thank you for highlighting her!
