I have watched the first episode of the show and it felt a little *uncomfy*. I've been a member my whole life, but I've become a lot more progressive as I've gotten older. There's things I definitely disagree with the church on (LGBTQ+, women's issues, racism, sexism, to name a few things), but I still have a testimony of the core principles of the gospel. I wish that they had better described the nuances in "being a Mormon" beyond being a "saint" or a "sinner", but I know that's a lot to ask of a tv show. I also don't love that the opening credits are close to temple grounds, that felt a touch sacrilegious to me.
Yes, seeing that shot at the temple felt out of place even in the trailer. It sounds like we have similar beliefs. Would we enjoy a show that dives into the nuances of being Mormon/ how Mormon someone is/ isn't..??
I've never watched the show, but I'm uncomfortable after reading that many members of the LDS Church describe the women on the program as in no way representing their faith, as being involved in activities completely contrary to LDS principles. Every religion on the face of the planet has its characters. I don't understand the purpose of singling out these kinds of people in a particular religious group as it can only be harmful and cruel.
Whenever I hear about a program like this, I ask myself: "What if this same show focused on Jewish people [because I'm Jewish] instead. Would I find it appropriate?" If the answer is no, why in the world would I want to see it when I'm trying to live the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself?
As a former Mormon, I watched purely for the cultural aspect of it— watching a show that was filmed in my college “hometown” was fun for me. The soda, the hair extensions, the accents… It almost feels like a trip to the zoo 🤷♀️
